Changing times

Do you remember those school reports that said ‘could do better.’ Or maybe that is just me!  But that was then and this is now.

Sometimes people feel that they could do better in their lives in some way.  Change works best when it comes from you and not your school teacher, husband, wife, parents or whoever.  If someone comes to me and says they want to give up smoking or lose weight.  My first question would be why do you want to do that.  And if the answer is my wife would like me to. I respond by saying that it would be better if they come back when they are ready to change their habits.

People might have been rolling along quite happily for ages and then something happens that  makes them see and feel life differently –  and that can be a catalyst to find new ways of doing things.  Have you felt a little knocked off balance by change of jobs, wanting a new career, children leaving home, divorce,  relationships, ill health? That is the time that is unsettling and you realize things have changed and you’d like to take a different path.

The prospect of change can be scary. And that is when fear creeps in and like rabbits in the headlights you can get stuck.  So look at how you want your life to be different, what you want to do, how you want to be.   Concentrate on that picture and think big – so many of us keep ourself small.  Dame Ellen MacArthur might still be sailing yellow ducks in her bath if she hadn’t thought big – a dream that propelled her around the world.

Don’t think of the why you can’t do something.  It could be you that runs a marathon, starts a business, finds your new partner?  You are as special, as unique, as deserving, with masses to offer as the next person.  If it’s your dream  you will accomplish it in your way and yor own time.  Is your dream inspiring, is it what you really want? What will that give you?  (Self respect, joy, creativity, peace, freedom, calm – go on, keep thinking of what it will really bring to you.)  And what is the first thing that you need to do to start your personal round the world trip?

All in your own time.  When the time right it’s right.  And only you know when you want to walk through that fear and begin a fresh phase in your life. And how exciting is that.
